When You Want to Throw Plates ::: because is prayer working?

Imperfectly Brave

I see you today, standing at your kitchen sink, wondering “where are you, God?” Your thoughts are so loud that I can even hear them, as they slink about in your mind.

“What good is prayer doing?”

Go ahead, break that plate. It might just match the volume of the thoughts making a racket in your mind.

Because really. What good is prayer doing?

Oh my friend, much. It is doing much.

You see, when you pray, you are sitting at the feet of a King and He is bending down to listen to you.

Yes, you.

And I have to say this out loud because I must remind myself also. I always need to be reminded of this.

Because the truth of the matter is that Jesus is taking our chins and gently tilting them up so that our eyes can meet His and we can know that

Yes, He cares.

Yes, He is listening.

Yes, He is moving.

Yes, He is transforming.

Because does prayer even work? I ask myself this all the time. This morning my mind felt jumbled as my thoughts were scattered. The to-do list got longer in my mind and nothing about the start of my day felt slow and sweet. The God of the Universe felt far and distant and I felt lonely and discouraged. The thoughts raged in my head.

But He is near. Sometimes I have to breath slower, deep breaths to usher in His nearness.

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him.” Psalm 145:18

In and out.

In and out.

In and out.

Maybe you and I can help each other to stop praying to a faraway God. Maybe we can learn to fear the God who is near. Maybe we can learn what it feels like to discern His voice so that we can be imperfectly brave together.

In the breathing out, God reminded me about His kingdom. In fact, He told me that He has given me the key to His kingdom. Because truth be told, you and me, we are heirs to the throne. You and me, we are daughters.

And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. Romans 8:17

So today, I am giving you permission today to be a daughter and all that comes with it.

Permission to:

To slow down.

To take away the opinions of the world.

To let your soul take a different pace.

Take deep breaths of trust.

Today, why don’t you:

Dance in your problems.

Give way to interruptions.

Mess up so badly that you fall down.

Because daughters dance. They trust the interruption.

Daughters don’t fear the failure, but the thought of never trying at all.

So, yeah, I see you over there with your kitchen towel hanging over your shoulder. Life looks different than you imagined. Today you feel like your prayers are only hanging on the gates of heaven rather than draped in the arms of your Maker. Or maybe you’ve even stopped praying because why?

What good is prayer doing anyway?

So, go ahead and break that plate.

Because daughter of a near King — your God is slow to anger. He is abounding in love. He is nearer than you think. He is whispering to you, “Keep coming. Keep asking. Keep falling at my feet.” Because He will keep tipping your chin up to lock eyes with Him. And I believe this is the secret of it all:

His presence.

And the shards of that plate. God can handle them. In fact, He might just make a beautiful mosaic. I hear He is good and creating beautiful things out of broken pieces. xo-whitney

PS How are you learning to pray? What keeps you near God’s throne? And really, have you ever broken a plate in the process?
