Year of Calling: Equipped

Week 10 Word: Equipped

Week 9 Text: 2 Timothy 3:17

Written By: Carrie Flener

“God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:17 NLT)

What is the “it” in this verse? What does God “use” to prepare and equip us?

Let’s look at the verse right before this one: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” (2 Timothy 3:16 NLT)

Verse 16 completes verse 17; verse 16 helps verse 17 make sense. It explains to us that God gave us the gift of His Word to equip us, prepare us, and teach us for every good work. Every good work.

Life is busy. Actually, the other day I heard someone call her life “full” instead of busy. I like that word a whole lot better — maybe that’s because it doesn’t seem so negative. Whichever word you use, we all experience it. The running from place to place and checking things off our “to do” lists. Taking care of the kids – making sure they have full bellies and clean clothes and homework done. Supporting our husbands, cleaning the house, being intentional with relationships. Not to mention (maybe) attempting to exercise, grab coffee with a friend, or (heaven forbid!) take a moment to just sit and breathe. It’s exhausting and usually we are forced to let something go.

All too often, that “something” is our time in God’s Word. Now, don’t for one hot second think I haven’t done the same thing. I’ve snoozed my alarm instead of getting up in the morning. I’ve let TV or my phone or work use up all of my free time. I have been guilty – just yesterday – of not making my time with God a priority.

What we all need to take note of is this…according to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, it is God’s Word (and ONLY God’s Word) that teaches us what is true and helps us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us and teaches us. God’s Word is the measuring stick for us to read and examine our lives – are we living a life worthy of the Gospel? Are we living like Jesus?

I don’t know about you, but this stops me in my tracks. If I’m not meditating on God’s Word, then how will I know if sin is creeping in?

If we don’t do anything else, spending time with God in His Word should be the most important thing because it will EQUIP us for every other thing we do that day.

Application Questions :

1. How can you make spending time in God’s Word more of a priority? What time of day works best to put on your calendar and set aside for Him?

2. What is one area of your life that you need equipped by the Lord? Share in the comments so we can be praying for you!
