No More Shiny Leggings ::: A (Short) Anthem to Undo Superwoman

Imperfectly Brave

I want to slow you down today, sweet girl. Yeah, I just want you to take a deep breath, grab yourself a coke and laugh loud. I want to find some kind of joy in this day. I actually want us to laugh so hard our insides split wide open and we come undone because have you seen our world — the ocean, a baby, the sunrise — lately? It is worth digging deep inside and finding joy.

Imperfectly Brave

When was the last time you (and I) had some joy?

Here is what I know about women: We carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. Can I get an amen? Can I get an amen to dinner and clean floors and perfect homework folders and happy husbands? Can I get an amen to mending broken friendships or crying over the busted relationships? What about an amen to being the one that does all the things, ties up all the loose ends and smiles while quietly closing gaps?

Can we all just go take a nap or something?

I feel like I am safe to say we are all tired. If we aren’t so very careful our dreams and hopes and tasks and life can outright take all of our joy. Then, we go digging and crawling for Jesus and we can’t even find one iota of our best friend in our lives. And we sigh because we remember we left Him out. I’ve done this before. I’ve even done this “in His name.” You know, ministry in the name of Jesus, except for Jesus was never asked invited in the first place.

And can I say something since we are talking over a coke and need a good laugh? We need to stop playing superwoman. Superwoman doesn’t look good on me and I am going to be presumptuous and say it doesn’t look good on you, either. (Have you seen blue shiny leggings on anyone? Yeah, blue metallic leggings are probably not our best look if you are over the age of 30 and have lived any kind of life. I personally am going to advise against them.)

I hope you and me and the whole woman world can take these words in love: We are not the major role. Let’s all take one another’s hands and take a step back. Can you feel my hand taking yours? We are just going to take one gigantic step back and we are going to fall somewhere and I guarantee you and I — we will be caught.

Imperfectly Brave

You see, God is the major role. He is the one who built your babies. He is stirring the galaxy so lovely and mysteriously that the most intelligent are still guessing. He is the builder of beautiful things: the vast ocean, the sunset with its pinks and blues and melted oranges, the humans next to you at Starbucks. He did this. He delicately breathed life into you and placed you in ALL OF YOUR PLACES TO not play the major role.

“We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.” Ephesians 2:10 The Message

Stop carrying the weight of the entire world on your shoulders.

Imperfectly Brave

What if you and I just stopped today and breathed? What if we begged God to move? What if we asked for Him to give us direction? And then, what if we planted seeds instead of plowing the land for forests? What if we let Him save the entire world? So, instead of moving our hands against the grain of hundred-year-old trees, we just held seeds in our hand? Tiny seeds of faith being planted in the dirt that our very God made brown.

And then let’s keep laughing because ain’t nobody need shiny leggings hanging in their closet. And plus, shiny leggings have no pockets for seeds. Just sayin’.
